Before the outdoor kitchen, home theatre and plunge pool, there was the quarter-acre block. A Hills Hoist. A barbecue. A patch of lawn that doubled as the MCG. That's where the real Aussie Dream lived.
The Aussie Dream is my tribute to those long, lazy Australian summers when the backyard was the centre of family life. Dad stood over the barbecue cooking snags, Mum worked on the perfect tan with a bottle of baby oil and a trusty goon sack nearby, the kids turned the lawn into a cricket pitch, totem tennis became a family championship, and the youngest cooled off in a Clark Rubber paddling pool.
Look a little closer and you'll spot plenty more familiar faces and moments—the family dog waiting patiently for a sausage, the neighbourhood magpie claiming the Hills Hoist as its throne, a lemon tree heavy with fruit, and countless little nods to suburban Australia in the 1970s and 80s.
For many Australians, this wasn't just a backyard. It was where weekends happened, summer holidays were spent, and lifelong memories were made.
Maybe... this really was the Aussie Dream.
