“Meter Maid” is a nostalgic tribute to the golden age of Surfers Paradise — a time of pink poodles, tiki bars, tropical motels, giant American cars and the famous meter maids of Cavill Avenue.
Inspired by the vibrant Gold Coast of the 1960s, this retro-styled artwork captures a lost era before high rises transformed the beachfront forever. Hidden throughout the piece are playful references to iconic Surfers Paradise landmarks and vintage signage, from tropical beer gardens and beachcomber motels to the unmistakable pink poodle.
At the centre of the scene stands the legendary Meter Maid, a uniquely Australian icon first introduced to Surfers Paradise in 1965 to help feed parking meters while promoting the city’s fun-loving holiday spirit.
With its pastel palette, mid-century styling and tongue-in-cheek nostalgia, “Meter Maid” celebrates the sunshine, glamour and quirky charm of Australia’s most famous beach strip.
